Startups in the life sciences are typically led by a small group of people, often the very scientists behind the novel technology or product.  These visionaries are extremely enthusiastic about their work, but they struggle to communicate their stories in ways that engage and excite their target audiences.

Scientists tend to want to say too much.   I frequently remind our clients that, in almost all cases, the primary job of the website is to:

1. reach the target audience;
2. tell (or better yet “show”) enough to interest them in the opportunity; and
3. lead them to the desired action, such as contacting the company.

Reaching the audience is a matter of proper website positioning and communications, which can involve a range of strategies and tools, but that topic is for another day.  Today, we will focus on telling the startup’s story effectively and driving their audience to the desired action.

Capturing the Audience

With the need to tackle this problem, an integrated move has been taken by the ministries concerned, with the objective to increase remittance inflow through official channels to meet the demand of foreign currencies in the country.

Taking this on board, an exclusive meeting was organised, chaired by Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain. The event was successful and debated a set of recommendations.

Dignitaries from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, National Board of Revenue (NBR), Bangladesh Bank; Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET), and Probashi Kallyan Bank were all present.

The event recommended changing the monetary policy and giving incentives to the migrant workers to encourage them to send money remittances through the legal channels.

It also promoted the idea of increasing the yield rates on the state-sponsored wage earners’ development bond by around 15 per cent and waiving its tax at source.

At present, the savers gain profit at 11.80 percent by investing in the wage earners’ development bond from which the authorities deduct 5.0 per cent tax on the interest rate after the bond has matured.

Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said previously that the profit rate of the bond was nearly double compared to other savings schemes, but now it was almost equal. Besides, 5.0 per cent tax at source has been imposed on the bond, he added.

“Against this backdrop, migrants are not interested to buy the bond. Given this fact, the flow of remittance has declined lately,” the minister told the meeting.

The attendees of the conference also to the decision to waive service charge on a limit of remittance worth US$ 500 and sending money to the beneficiaries in a shorter time.

As for the outcome of the meeting, before the finance ministry or Bangladesh Bank take any decision on remittance and manpower export-related issues, they have to ensure the participation of the manpower ministry and the foreign ministry representatives.

The BMET will brief the migrants on the sending process of remittance before their travel to the foreign destinations, the meeting decided.

Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry Joint Secretary Nurul Islam said the recommendations had been sent for implementation to the ministries concerned and departments including Bangladesh Bank, NBR, finance, foreign and home ministries.

“The authorities will implement the decisions immediately,” hoped the Joint Secretary adding, “If we can execute the measures properly, the remittance inflow will increase significantly in the coming days.”

Bangladeshis working abroad sent remittances worth over US$ 1.13 billion in February this year, despite the continuing political crisis in the Middle East and economic down turn in the United States and Europe.

The amount is on increase by US$ 144 million, or 14.58 percent compared to the amount sent during the same month in the last fiscal year.

Taking this figure into account, the country received a total of US$ 8.420 billion in remittances from overseas Bangladeshis during the first eight months (July-February) of the present fiscal year.

According to official statistics, more than seven million Bangladeshis now work abroad and they remitted a record $11.65 billion in the last fiscal year (2010-11), much of it made easier by a modern money transfer system.

If Bangladesh is successful in regulating the remittance industry within it’s own country the benefits at the macro level should be huge.
